The New York Times reports that the extradition request was issued on June 25 and was made public Friday by Mexican Attorney General Arely Gomez Gonzalez.
Guzman, whose Sinaloa Cartel provides about one-quarter of the drugs in the United States, according to U.S. authorities, escaped from prison on July 11. It was the second time he had escaped from Mexican prison, having previously broken out in 2001 and been on the run for over 12 years.
