Sanders was beginning to speak to several thousand gathered at Westlake Park when a pair of women took the microphone, speaking about the death of black teenager Michael Brown at the hands of a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri last year. Sanders was pushed away as he attempted to take back the microphone.
According to the Seattle Times, the protesters demanded four and a half minutes of silence, representing the amount of hours Michael Brown’s body was left on the street after he was shot by officer Darren Wilson.
After the silence, the protesters said they were holding Sanders accountable for not addressing their concerns during a similar interruption last month in Phoenix, the Times adds.
Eventually, rally organizers called the event over and Sanders left the stage. The senator asked attendees to attend a rally later in the day at the University of Washington.
