Facebook User Defends Target Anonymously After Gender Signage Change

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — An anonymous Facebook user defends Target from upset customers.
After Target’s recent news of eliminating gender-based signage, a Facebook user posed as a Target customer service representative to respond to some of the other users who were not in favor of the change.
The user looked very official with “Ask ForHelp” as the name and Target’s logo as the picture.
A disgruntled customer named Gary posted on Target’s wall saying, “I know this means little to Target but I’m tired of all the political correctness…”
The user responded, “Actually Gary, you’re wrong. It means NOTHING to us that you feel this way. Have a great day!”
According to AdWeek, the Facebook user was Mike Melgaard and he commented on over 50 posts for 16 hours before his account was shut down. He found out about Target changing its signage on Sunday.
“Immediately, I knew there would be your typical outraged American spouting emotional reactions on their Facebook page,” Melgaard told AdWeek. “After taking a look, I was literally laughing out loud at my computer. A few more minutes in and it struck me how hilarious it would be to portray myself as a parody customer service rep. So, I did just that, and the rest was history. Honestly, it was like striking comedy gold. Every one of these people gave me the ammunition I needed for a great response.”
On Thursday, Target released a statement to AdWeek.
“At Target, we are committed to providing outstanding guest service to our guests wherever we engage with them—in our stores, online, or on our social pages. Clearly this individual was not speaking on behalf of Target. Should guests ever have questions on whether a communication from Target is legitimate, we encourage them to reach out to guest relations at 1-800-440-0680.”
