Lindsey Stirling and Alex Boyé to perform at BYU-Idaho

REXBURG — Brigham Young University-Idaho has announced its lineup for its upcoming Center Stage series this fall. The performances include a mix of classical and more contemporary events.
Highlights of the series will include pop singer Alex Boyé, electronic violinist Lindsey Stirling and others. The series will run from Sept. 18 until Dec. 16 with events typically scheduled on Friday and Saturday evenings.
“Events are geared toward students, but are open to the public as well,” said Don Sparhawk, Center Stage & Performance Tours coordinator. “It is important to have acts that educate the students.”
BYU-Idaho helps subsidize the cost of tickets for classical and more educational events due to a lower turn out from the public. For larger more contemporary events like Alex Boyé and Lindsey Stirling the school relies on ticket sales to cover the cost of the performance, so the events will cost more than typical events held by Center Stage. The school’s goal is to educate and break even on cost of the events, not to make money.
The school works hard to find acts that meet its standards, and that are also educational and entertaining to students and the public. “Surprisingly it isn’t hard to get acts to come to Idaho away from larger metro areas, as long as you pay them what they require they will come.” Sparhawk said.

With more than 110 million total YouTube views and counting, Alex Boyé is “Africanizing” the pop landscape, infusing the explosive rhythms and various languages of his ancestral continent (he was raised by his Nigerian mother) into his music. Embracing his rich heritage after years of successful recordings as a gospel artist, the London born, U.S. based vocal powerhouse is having a breakthrough year as a mainstream pop artist. Alex said, “The ultimate goal is to make people feel good and give them a few moments of uplift, which as I’ve discovered over the years, can have transforming and even lifesaving potential.”

Gentri
Saturday, Oct. 10

Gentri is comprised of three highly trained tenors: Brad Robins, Casey Elliott, and Bradley Quinn Lever. Their self-titled, debut album was released March 31 and spent its first five weeks in the top five on two different Billboard charts, including two consecutive weeks at the No. 2 spot on both the Classical and Classical Crossover charts. On the heels of their album release, the Gents debuted their first music video to their original single “Dare,” which made international headlines on news outlets around the world. Gentri is pioneering a signature sound that can be described only as ‘Cinematic Pop,’ a fusion of lush, epic orchestrations coupled with rich, dynamic three-part harmonies.

Lindsey Stirling
Friday, Oct. 16

Lindsey Stirling is one of the biggest artist breakthrough stories in recent years. A classically trained violinist from Gilbert, Arizona, Lindsey has entered a futurist world of electronic big beats and animation, leaping through the music industry with over half a billion views on YouTube, Billboard chart-topping hits and sold-out tours worldwide. On stage, she moves with the grace of a ballerina but works the crowd into a frenzy, “dropping the beat” like a rave fairy. Stirling is the model of a modern independent recording artist, with a symbiotic relationship with her fans. She is famed for taking “requests” and has recorded unique versions of the themes from Phantom of the Opera and “Game of Thrones,” the computer games “Zelda,” “Pokemon” and “Skyrim,” as well as pop songs by Michael Jackson and Rihanna.

Adam Trent – The Futurist

Adam Trent is a star for a new generation of magic fans, fusing classic techniques, dancing, comedy and technology in a show that shatters stereotypes for those who think they’ve seen it all. His edgy, fun style has been described as “Justin Timberlake meets David Copperfield” and has put him on a fast-track to global fame. Not only is he one of the youngest international award-winning magicians in history, U.S. News & World Report magazine identified him as one of “The 10 Most Influential Youths in the Nation.”

Aeolus Quartet
Friday, Nov. 6

Violinists Nicholas Tavani and Rachel Shapiro, violist Gregory Luce, and cellist Alan Richardson formed the Aeolus Quartet in 2008 at the Cleveland Institute of Music where they were studying. The quartet was grand prize winner of the 2011 Plowman Chamber Music Competition and 2011 Chamber Music Yellow Springs Competition, and currently is the Graduate Resident String Quartet at the Juilliard School in New York City. They will perform the Dvorak Quartet in A-flat Major and the Schubert Quartet in D minor, “Death and the Maiden.”

A BYU-Idaho Christmas (with special guests Time for Three)

Time for Three will be the featured guests at the university’s fifth Christmas program in the BYU-Idaho Center. The group will join the Symphony Orchestra, Concert Choir, Men’s Choir, Women’s Choir, Vocal Union, and other students from the College of Performing and Visual Arts. The groundbreaking trio Time for Three transcends traditional classification, with elements of classical, country western, gypsy and jazz idioms forming a blend all its own. Recent highlights included their Carnegie Hall debut, appearances with the Boston Pops, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a sell-out concert at the 2014 BBC Proms, and an appearance on “Dancing with the Stars.”
