There is no word on casualties and a U.S. defense official said there are no indications right now of hostile fire.
U.S. Central Command confirmed that the crash occurred shortly after midnight Thursday local time.
“We are still conducting an initial assessment of what happened,” said Major Genieve David, a Centcom spokesperson.
Two U.S. officials said that the aircraft was on approach to the airport when it crashed.
The C-130 is a cargo workhorse in Afghanistan helping to supply the 9,800 American military troops still in the country and is equipped with some of the most sophisticated navigational equipment.
No information was available as to the number of passengers that may have been aboard the aircraft in addition to the three crew members.
