LDS First Presidency issues letter regarding new policy

SALT LAKE CITY — The First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has issued a letter regarding provisions on same-gender marriage recently added to its handbooks.
In the letter, addressed to the general membership of the church, the First Presidency reaffirms that “adults who choose to enter into a same-gender marriage or similar relationship commit sin that warrants a Church disciplinary council.”
According to the letter, the changes were made for the well-being of children and their home environment.
The statement also clarifies that when a “child living with such a same-gender couple has already been baptized and is actively participating in the Church,” the new provisions do not require that “his or her membership activities or privileges be curtailed or further ordinances be withheld.”
Additionally, LDS Church Public Affairs released a statement further explaining the changes.
