Firefighters try to save cats caught in a house fire

POCATELLO — A local woman lost two of her pets after her home caught fire Monday morning.

KPVI News that Works for You reporter Deanne Coffin was on the scene.

Before noon on Monday the Pocatello Fire Department was called to a house fire on Delano Avenue, where firefighters tried and failed to save her two cats.

The fire department responded to the home after they received a report of smoke coming out of the house.

Neighbors that live two houses down say they smelled smoke coming from the home.

“It was quite a bit and it was coming out the side — it was a lot. They were just lucky that nobody was home and everybody is all right,” says neighbor Christopher Day.

Firefighters tried to save two of the cats that were inside the home at the time of the fire.

“Certainly we want to do whatever we can to help the resident out. You know pets are dear to the owners of those pets, and so certainly we are going to try and resuscitate them as well,” says Ron Davis of the Pocatello Fire Department.

Much like lifesaving techniques they use on people, the firefighters did chest compressions to try to get the cats’ hearts beating again.

“They are going to try and ventilate and get some oxygen into the animal as well and in this case, unfortunately there was nothing that could be done,” says Davies.

Fire officials say that although the firefighters were not able to save the cats, crews did a good job putting the fire out quickly.

They say there were three cats in the home, but they only found two.

It appears the fire started in the living room, but the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation.
