L. Whitney Clayton to speak at BYU-Idaho commencement

The following is a news release from Brigham Young University-Idaho.

REXBURG — Elder L. Whitney Clayton, a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will address 2,079 graduates at Brigham Young University-Idaho’s 2017 Winter Semester Commencement on Friday, April 7. The event will be held at 5:45 p.m. in the BYU-Idaho Center.

The university will award 1,659 bachelor’s degrees and 440 associate degrees. Of the graduates, 1,243 are women and 836 are men. More than 50 percent have served as missionaries for the Church.

Clayton was sustained as a General Authority Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in March 2001. He has served as a member of the Presidency of the Seventy since 2008 and was named Senior President of the Quorums of the Seventy in October 2015.

Elder Clayton has served in a number of Church callings, including full-time missionary in Peru, Area Seventy, regional representative, counselor in a mission presidency, stake high councilor, bishop, stake mission president, and Gospel Doctrine teacher.

Elder Clayton earned a bachelor’s degree in finance at the University of Utah and a law degree at the University of the Pacific. He was an attorney in California, from 1978 to 2001.

Elder Clayton was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 24, 1950. He married Kathy Ann Kipp in August 1973. They are parents of seven children.

Accompanying Elder Clayton at BYU-Idaho’s winter commencement will be Elder Kim B. Clark, General Authority Seventy and Commissioner of the Church Educational System. Clark served as president of BYU-Idaho from 2005 to 2015.
