RICHFIELD — Twelve junior high school students were transported to local hospitals — five by air — after a bus rolled Tuesday afternoon.

Idaho State Police said the accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. along U.S. Highway 26, just west of Richfield.

Officials said 39 students were on the bus at the time of the crash.

Idaho State Police say Richard Mecham, 67, of Carey, was driving westbound on the highway. He drove off the right shoulder, overcorrected and rolled the bus, police said.

Mecham wasn’t hurt, and the adult chaperones in the bus were treated and released at the crash.

The bus was transporting Carey Junior High students to a track meet.

Both lanes of travel are now open.
