Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office issues scam alert

  Published at  | Updated at

The following is a news release from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.

BONNEVILLE COUNTY — The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office has received several calls over the past couple of weeks regarding a phone scam where the caller claims to be a detective or officer from our agency.

During the call, the victims are asked to go to a store to obtain a money card of some kind and turn it over to the supposed officer.

No law enforcement agencies or court entities collect money in this manner for any kind of fines, warrants, etc.

The Sheriff’s Office serves many different kinds of civil papers and warrants in person or with the individual reporting to court or the jail. We DO NOT call people by phone to solicit money for fines or to solve other problems. We DO call individuals by phone for law enforcement and investigative purposes, but there is absolutely no reason we would ask someone to pay us money via money cards from a store.

Please be aware of this and other similar types of scams, even if they identify themselves as Law enforcement. A number of these scams target the elderly and we urge you to educate your family members.

Feel free to call the sheriff’s office or your local police to verify if an actual officer is attempting to contact you.

If you receive the type of scam where someone claims to be your relative requesting bond money to get out of jail, you can always call the jail where they “claim” to be housed to verify if it is true.

This is just a couple of examples of current phone scam trends we’ve heard of lately.

Remember if it sounds suspicious you can always take the time to verify who is contacting you.

If you fall victim to a phone scam and have lost money, we urge you to report it immediately to your local law enforcement and to monitor your financial accounts.
