IDAHO FALLS — A cyclist was hospitalized after he fell into traffic near the intersection of 17th Street and Calkins Avenue.

The cyclist, a man, was headed east along 17th Street on the sidewalk around 2:30 p.m., according to police. At some point, it appears he fell off his bike and tumbled into oncoming traffic.

Both he and his bicycle were struck by a white van that was traveling westbound.

Idaho Falls spokeswoman Kerry Hammon said it is unclear what caused the cyclist to fall into traffic.

Both Idaho Falls police and Idaho Falls Fire EMS responded.

The man was transported by ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries.

He was not wearing a helmet, police say.

The accident is still under investigation.
