Dog poop decoy packages deter porch thieves for Utah homeowner

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (KSL) — Brian Calitri’s porch has been a prime target for package thieves.

“The last 4 years it’s gotten really bad,” Calitri said.

His home near 300 South and 600 East has been hit dozens of times and he’s filed more than 30 police reports, he said.

And despite his surveillance cameras giving police extra evidence, he said each time the thieves typically get away.

“I always file a police report but it’s tough to track them down, so I end up having to do my own thing and it works, it really works,” Calitiri said.

So over the last two months, he developed an interesting deterrent for thieves — dog poop.

And Calitiri’s dog, Jimmy, will help him curb the criminals. Jimmy’s deed? Filling decoy boxes.

“Use a little pooper scooper, fill it up, tape it, put it out front,” Calitiri said referring to the fake package he left potential package thieves.

Although Calitiri’s way of fighting crime may be unconventional, he said it seems to be working. Several decoy packages have been taken. Since then, Calitiri said the volume of thefts has gone down.

“Filling the packages with poop, it’s low risk and seems to be effective so I say ‘Why not, you know?'”
