FORECAST: High winds and blowing dust close I-15 between Idaho Falls and Roberts
Published at | Updated atIDAHO FALLS — The Idaho Transportation Department has closed Interstate 15 between the U.S. Highway 20 Broadway exit in Idaho Falls to Idaho Highway 33 near Roberts due to strong wind and blowing dust.
The National Weather Service has issued high wind warnings throughout eastern Idaho for Wednesday afternoon. Southwest winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts of more than 50 mph are expected until at least 9 p.m.
The winds are picking up dust, which is significantly reducing visibility, especially along I-15 between Idaho Falls and Roberts.
Strong crosswinds will develop and will be most impactful on most northwest-southeast oriented roads. The combination of strong crosswinds and reduced visibility will make all vehicle travel potentially hazardous, according to NWS. High profile vehicles are especially susceptible.
The following communities are effected by the wind: American Falls, Aberdeen, Pocatello, Fort Hall, Blackfoot, Idaho Falls, Rexburg and Idaho National Lab.
