2 Northern Idaho police officers rushed to hospital after being shot

SANDPOINT — Two Northern Idaho police officers were shot and a man is dead after an incident early Monday morning.

The Sandpoint Police Department responded to a call for service at 3:10 a.m. at a residence in Ridley Village, according to a news release. When police arrived, a suspect stepped out of the residence and began firing. Both officers on scene were struck.

One officer was transported to Kootenai Medical Center and the second was taken to Bonner General Hospital. Both sustained serious injuries but are expected to recover, according to the Sandpoint Police Department.

The male suspect was killed by returning gun fire from police. His identity has not been released.

The scene has been turned over to the North Idaho Critical Incident Task Force.

Sandpoint High and Middle Schools have initiated lockout procedures as a precaution.

Police plan to hold a news conference at 5 p.m. with new information.
