Coeur d’Alene principal dies of apparent suicide

COEUR D’ALENE — Coeur d’Alene High School Principal Troy Schueller died Wednesday in what district officials described as a suicide.
Schueller was found at his home “with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” the Coeur d’Alene School District said in an email Wednesday. He was taken to Kootenai Health and was pronounced dead at about 2 p.m.
Classes were canceled for today, but the building will be open, with crisis counselors available to speak to students, staff, family members and the public.
“This is a horrific incident that we all need to help each other recover from, and this will not be over in an hour or day or week,” interim superintendent Stan Olson said Wednesday. “It will take time and focus and effort.”
Schueller had spent 10 years at Coeur d’Alene High School, the past two as principal, according to the Spokane Spokesman-Review. His son is a student at Coeur d’Alene High School, the Spokesman-Review reported.
“Troy was a valuable member of our school family and a tremendous person,” board chairman Casey Morrisroe said Wednesday. “He had accomplished amazing things at Coeur d’Alene High School during the past two school years, and his smile and leadership will be missed. Beyond that, Troy was a great husband, father and friend.”
