East Idaho Eats: Mrs. Powell’s adds new flare to classic favorites

  Published at  | Updated at

AMMON — After getting a new owner last March, Mrs. Powell’s has revamped its menu items while keeping its classic treats.

“We’ve got a new cookie recipe, we’ve added scones, the cinnamon rolls are obviously all very good,” owner Amy Romriell said.

The shop that’s been selling sweets for over 30 years has aimed to keep craving customers happy. Its staple recipe has been a giant cinnamon roll, which Romriell has made some tweaks on.

“I’ve refined all of the recipes. I just kind of brought my own flare to it. All of the cinnamon rolls are still the same great cinnamon roll that you remember with Mrs. Powell’s. I’ve just kind of improved the frosting a little bit and I’ve added my own cookies, Romriell said. The original cinnamon roll recipe came from the kitchen of founder Gale Powell.

Romriell said the recipes aren’t the only thing that’s changed. She’s done some reorganizing as well, adding new menu boards and fresh paint on the walls.

Although most traditional recipes remain, some specialty rolls that were made before are no longer available.

“That’s the main thing that some people have noticed that they’ve missed,” Romriell said.

If a customer has never been to Mrs. Powell’s, Romriell has a few suggestions: a mini cinnamon roll, a chocolate chip cookie, a sugar cookie or a scone.

“You need to try a mini cinnamon roll because our main thing is the cinnamon rolls and so you just need to try it in its unadulterated form,” Romriell said.

Find Mrs. Powell’s in Ammon at 1813 S. 25th East or on Facebook or Instagram.
