BLACKFOOT — A man was stabbed in the face and taken to the hospital during a fight in Blackfoot Thursday afternoon.

Two Las Vegas natives were arrested in connection to the fight and are being held at the Bingham County Jail.

Christian Allen Schmidt, 43, was arrested for aggravated battery, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Robyn Lynn Smerdel, 34, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia.

Blackfoot Police Department officers were called to the intersection of East Judicial Street and North Stout Avenue around noon. When they arrived, the suspects had fled the scene and but witnesses were able to a brief description.

Schmidt and Smerdel were located on Fisher Street near Smith Street.

Blackfoot Fire and EMS arrived after officers secured the scene and treated 41-year-old Richard Fowler. He was taken by ambulance to Bingham Memorial Hospital.

Officers with the Blackfoot Police Department and Bingham County Sheriff’s Office obtained a search warrant on the suspect’s vehicle. They determined the fight was the result of a child custody issue that had gone wrong.

During the altercation, a knife was brought out and Fowler was stabbed in the face, according to police.

Schmidt and Smerdel are expected to appear in court Friday.
