Winter weather in eastern Idaho through early Saturday morning
Published at | Updated atIDAHO FALLS — The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory in most of eastern Idaho all day Friday and into early Saturday.
The advisory is in effect in the following counties: Bonneville, Madison, Teton, Fremont, Jefferson, Butte, Bingham, Power, Bannock, Franklin and Caribou.
The valleys around Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Rigby, St. Anthony and Mud Lake are expected to see up to 3 inches of snow throughout the day. Slightly more snow — between 1 to 4 inches — is expected in the lowlands surrounding Pocatello, Chubbuck and Fort Hall.
Higher elevations areas are expecting more snow. Montpelier, Soda Springs, Henry, Bone, Victor, Ashton, and Driggs can all expect to see between 4 to 6 inches of snow. Up to 12 inches of snow is forecast at the highest elevations and in many of the mountain passes along the Montana and Wyoming borders.
Travel is expected to be difficult throughout the day with snowy and slushy highways all across the region.
As of 10:30 a.m. Friday all of the highways north of Rexburg and Victor — including Idaho Highway 33 and U.S. Highway 20 — were showing difficult conditions due snow on the road. The same conditions exist east of Interstate 15 corridor between Pocatello and Malad and the Wyoming border, according to the Idaho Transportation Department.
