LAVA HOT SPRINGS — A man was airlifted to a local hospital after being hit by a train Monday.

The Bannock County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:45 p.m. The incident happened on Symons Road and Blaser Road outside Lava Hot Springs.

The man, who is in his 80s, was driving a Dodge Ram truck when a Union Pacific train hit him.

“He passed somebody and went across the tracks and got hit. He failed to yield to the train,” said Sgt. Jon Everson with the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office.

Nobody else was with him. His name is not being released at this time.

“He was airlifted … to Portneuf Medical Center, and that’s where he’s at now,” said Everson.

Everson told EastIdahoNews.com his condition is not known at this time; however, the man was talking at the scene but was in a lot of pain.

As of 1:40 p.m. on Tuesday, officials were waiting for a tow truck to clear the Dodge Ram.

Everson added that Idaho State Police, Pocatello Fire Department, and Lava Hot Springs Ambulance responded to the crash.

“When you come to crossings, pay attention … and listen to the train’s horn,” he reminded drivers.
