‘Leave today if you are coming to Idaho.’ Snow expected on Thanksgiving — here’s how much

POCATELLO — A winter storm is expected to arrive on Thanksgiving, the National Weather Service in Pocatello said Wednesday.
“If you have to travel tomorrow, you got to understand that you will be running into some winter weather hazardous road conditions,” said Mike Huston, an NWS meteorologist.
NWS in Pocatello has issued a winter weather advisory, which is from 6 a.m. Thursday to 9 a.m. Friday. It will affect multiple places in eastern Idaho, including Mud Lake, Idaho Falls, Rexburg, St. Anthony, Pocatello, Blackfoot, American Falls, Shelley, Fort Hall, and Burley.

“We are forecasting about 2 to 3 inches up in Idaho Falls and somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 inches in Pocatello,” said Huston. “There is a slight chance that we could see some higher amounts, and those would be around 5 inches in Idaho Falls and potentially 5 to 6 inches between Pocatello and Burley.”
Winds could gust as high as 35 mph at times, which will produce blowing and drifting snow, according to the advisory.
Huston said adjusting your traveling time frame is essential for the holiday.
“Leave today if you are coming to Idaho. Maybe adjust your time frame of when you are going to leave (Idaho). If you thought you were going to leave Friday, adjust for travel out of the area on Saturday,” he said.
He told EastIdahoNews.com that Thursday will be the big day for snow, and some of the white stuff should continue into Friday. Take a look at the Thanksgiving winter storm timeline below.
“Don’t travel if you don’t have to or travel at a different time when you are not going to have weather,” Huston said.
He suggested being prepared by packing winter weather kits in vehicles, letting people know when you are supposed to arrive at a destination, and having your cell phone charged in case you need any help.

“Make sure you check the latest forecast to see what is going on and what is expected during the time of your travel,” Huston said.
