IDAHO FALLS – The National Weather Service in Pocatello is forecasting the coldest temperatures of the season this weekend as an arctic front moves through eastern Idaho.
There may be some light snow Friday night and Saturday before the initial drop in temperatures Saturday night.
Meteorologist Jack Messick tells EastIdahoNews.com most of eastern Idaho will be affected. Daytime highs in the teens are expected with single digits and subzero overnight temperatures.
“The cold air moves in on Saturday and temperatures will struggle to get into the upper teens and lower 20s,” Messick says.
Temperatures will get even colder Sunday night, with temperatures dropping 7 to 12 degrees, depending on your location.
A graphic provided by the NWS shows low temperatures, combined with the wind chill, hovering between -11 and -15 for the Rexburg, Idaho Falls and Blackfoot areas on Sunday night. Farther north, temperatures look even colder. The NWS is forecasting -22 in Island Park.
Arco, Mud Lake, Dubois and Mackay will see temperatures between -15 and -21. The Leadore area will be a frigid -27.
It will be slightly warmer in Pocatello, Preston and Rockland. The low in Pocatello will be -1, with lows of -5 and -3 in Rockland and Preston respectively.
The coldest temperatures will be on Sunday night, Messick says. The cold snap will continue into Tuesday with temperatures gradually rising into single digit subzero temperatures.
Messick says these temperatures are dangerously cold and urges people to be prepared and limit time outside.
“Make sure your car is ready for winter driving,” says Messick. “Protect your pets and watch out for your water pipes.”
