The following is a news release from Idaho State Police.

Idaho State Police and Spirit Lake Police Department are investigating a two-vehicle fatal crash that occurred May 3, at approximately 11:40 p.m. at the intersection of State Highway 54 and Coeur d’Alene Drive in Kootenai County.

Preliminary investigation indicates a 2022 Honda touring style motorcycle, driven by a 61-year-old female from Spirit Lake, was traveling westbound on SH 54 near Coeur d’Alene Drive, when a 2014 Subaru SUV, driven by a 23-year-old male from Spirit Lake, who had been traveling eastbound on Highway 54, failed to yield the right of way, began to make a left turn onto northbound Coeur d’Alene Drive, and crashed into the Honda.

The driver of the Subaru was wearing their seatbelt at the time of the crash and was uninjured. The driver of the motorcycle was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and succumbed to injuries at the scene.

Traffic on Highway 54 was blocked in both directions for approximately two hours to allow emergency responders to assist those involved.

Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor.

The Kootenai County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased after the next of kin has been notified and will determine the cause and manner of death.

This incident remains under investigation by the Idaho State Police.
