IDAHO FALLS – Idaho Falls Fire Department responded to a structure fire late Sunday night off East 109th North in Bonneville County.
What started as a chimney fire quickly upgraded to an attic fire at the single-story, single-family residence.
The fire was reported just before 11 p.m. Upon arrival, firefighters observed heavy smoke pushing from the eaves. Shortly thereafter, the fire self-vented through the roof.
Crews worked to access and suppress the fire, which was made challenging by a remodel and addition to the home. Firefighters encountered multiple roof layers, including plaster and sheeting, as well as a concealed false roof that was not visible until crews cut into the structure. The fire was ultimately extinguished, but the home sustained extensive damage.
A fire investigator was requested to the scene, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Chaplains were also called to assist the family with post-fire needs.
Estimated damage to the home is around $175,000. Fire crews completed operations around 2 a.m. Monday.
