11-year-old’s 3D-printables stand gets high marks on Facebook, but needs more customers

IDAHO FALLS — A boy from Idaho Falls using his 3D-printing skills to earn enough money to buy himself a gecko has received overwhelming online support. Now he’s asking for some real-life financial support to meet his goal.
While attending the 2026 Reptile Expo in Idaho Falls, 11-year-old Donovan Coon caught sight of a leopard gecko. He has since obtained his parents’ permission to open a small stand and earn money to purchase one as a pet.
“I just really wanted something I could kinda play with. … They’re really cute (and) cool,” Donovan said.
He recently set up shop on the corner of St. Clair Road and John Adams Parkway. Across his table, Donovan has various 3D-printed sculptures of gnomes, dragons, Pokémon characters, and much more for sale.
“He was out here for six hours his first day,” said Korey Kolbet, Donovan’s mom.
Wanting to get the word out, Donovan’s father, Tyler Coon, posted about The 3D Fun Shop on the Life in Idaho Falls Facebook group. The post received wide support, with more than 60 comments from community members offering compliments or advice to help Donovan care for his future pet.
“It’s been really nice. It shows how there’s still good people out there who are really nice … and willing to help you,” Donovan said.
To afford the reptile and all the necessary equipment for its care, Donovan is looking to raise between $300 and $500. But so far, the challenge has been getting people to stop and take a look at his inventory.
“On my first day, I didn’t get any sales,” Donovan said.
However, he is determined to keep going and, despite the challenge, has his parents’ support.
“If a kid wants to try something, they should definitely try it,” Tyler Coon said.
If you’re interested in purchasing a figurine or two, Donovan said plans to have his stand open for business from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Sunday, Monday and Wednesday throughout the summer.
