Big changes to Idaho vehicle registration begins Wednesday

IDAHO FALLS — Starting Wednesday, Idaho drivers will notice a big change when it comes to vehicle registration.

The state is eliminating annual registration stickers on license plates and moving to permanent license plates, changes officials say will simplify the registration process and save taxpayers money.

Beginning July 1, under House Bill 533, Idaho will no longer issue or require annual registration stickers. Drivers will still be required to renew their vehicle registration on time, but a valid license plate and current vehicle registration now satisfy state law. Officials estimate ending the sticker program will save about $300,000 a year in production and material costs.

Drivers are encouraged to keep a printed copy of their vehicle registration inside their vehicles. Failing to register a vehicle can still result in a $101 citation.

The state is also switching to permanent license plates. Instead of replacing plates on a set schedule, motorists will only need to get new plates if their current ones become damaged or too worn for law enforcement to read.

Officials say the changes will not affect traffic stops. Law enforcement officers will continue verifying vehicle registration electronically.

One exception remains: registration stickers issued by the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation are still required for off-highway vehicles, off-highway motorcycles, boats, snowmobiles and other vehicles regulated by the department.

State officials say the updates are designed to streamline Idaho’s vehicle registration system while maintaining safety and compliance on the roads.
