Record-breaking heat bakes eastern Idaho as another advisory takes effect

IDAHO FALLS – It’s going to be another scorcher after Saturday’s heat advisory and red flag warning.
The National Weather Service in Pocatello has issued another heat advisory on Sunday. It will remain in effect until 9 p.m. The orange area in the map below shows what areas are included. Areas listed on the Pocatello bureau’s website include Thatcher, Malta, Rexburg, Inkom, Preston, St. Anthony, Holbrook, Lava Hot Springs, Mud Lake, Malad, Rockland, Craters of the Moon NM, Heyburn, McCammon, Carey, Oakley, Idaho Falls, Albion, Fort Hall, Burley, Rupert, Idaho National Lab, American Falls, Downey, Richfield, Blackfoot, Pocatello, Shelley, Almo, and Shoshone.

On its Facebook page Saturday night, meteorologists in Pocatello reported multiple high temperature records in Idaho Falls, Pocatello and Stanley. Saturday’s high of 99-degrees at the Idaho Falls Regional Airport breaks the previous record of 98 set in 1954.
At the Pocatello Regional Airport, the high of 101 breaks the previous record of 99 set in 1994. At the Stanley Ranger Station, the high of 88 ties the current record, which was set in 1968.
On Sunday afternoon, forecasters say temperatures across eastern Idaho will range from 95- to 100-degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the area.
The outlook for the rest of the week shows temperatures in the 90s. On Monday, the daytime high is expected to be 91. It will start out cloudy and gradually become mostly sunny. Gusts up to 21 mph are likely.
Similar conditions are in store for Tuesday. On Wednesday, the predicted daytime high is 90-degrees, but there is a 20% chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon.
The seven-day forecast shows temperatures gradually increase Thursday and Friday. By Saturday, temperatures will be back into the upper 90s.
“Hot temperatures may cause heat illnesses,” meteorologists say. “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”
