This Idaho Falls intersection will be closed for the next 30 days during roundabout construction

The following is a news release from the city of Idaho Falls.

IDAHO FALLS – Construction begins Sunday on a new roundabout at the intersection of Birch Street and South Boulevard as the City of Idaho Falls continues investing in transportation infrastructure that improves safety and traffic flow for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

The City of Idaho Falls has contracted DL Beck Inc. to construct the new roundabout. The project is designed to reduce conflict points, improve visibility, and create more efficient traffic movement through the intersection and along the surrounding roadway network.

As of Sunday morning, the Birch Street and South Boulevard intersection is fully closed to all traffic while construction is underway. Clearly marked detour routes will be in place to safely direct drivers around the work zone.

The closure is anticipated to last about 30 days, while construction is expected to last around 120 days, with the completion of the project in late fall. This schedule may change due to weather or unforeseen conditions.

This project compliments the success of the Elm Street roundabout located just south of the intersection, which has improved traffic movement and safety in the area.

Key improvements for the project include:

• Constructing a roundabout to reduce conflict points, keep traffic moving efficiently, and lower the likelihood of serious crashes.
• Realigning the intersection so Birch Street meets South Boulevard at a right angle instead of a skew, improving visibility.
• Removing some on-street parking near the intersection to improve sight lines for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
• Upgrading pedestrian and bicycle crossings to increase visibility and shorten crossing distances, making it safer and easier to move through the intersection without a car.

Drivers should expect temporary changes to their normal travel routes during construction and are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and follow all posted detour signs.
