Wheel flies off Jeep, sending 3 to hospital after crash near Montpelier

OVID – Three people were airlifted to a local hospital following a two-vehicle crash near Montpelier late Saturday night.
A news release from Idaho State Police says it happened a little after 10 p.m. on Idaho Highway 36 in Ovid, an unincorporated community about six miles west of Montpelier.
A 22-year-old Idaho Falls man — whom authorities didn’t name — was driving west on Highway 36 in a silver 2012 Jeep Wrangler. Its front wheel came off, hitting a red 2016 Hyundai Elantra in the eastbound lane. The driver of the Hyundai — a 21-year-old man from Lovell, Wyoming — veered off the road and hit a tree. Two 22-year-old women from Montpelier were in the car with him.
Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt. Police did not report any injuries to the driver of the Jeep Wrangler, but the Hyundai driver and both his passengers were injured. The extent of their injuries is unclear, but an ambulance crew initially picked them up before an air ambulance came and took them to the hospital.
Both lanes were blocked for about six hours while emergency responders were on scene. Idaho State Police are still investigating the crash.
