After record July heat, cooler weather finally arrives in eastern Idaho

IDAHO FALLS – After one of the hottest months on record for eastern Idaho, the National Weather Service in Pocatello says daytime highs will normalize this week.
Meteorologist Erica Cropp tells EastIdahoNews.com temperatures will be in the upper 70s to low 80s through Wednesday.
“Maybe starting to get into the mid 80s in some areas, lower elevations,” Cropp says. “Beginning Thursday, we’ll start to see temperatures warm up.”
Cropp is forecasting peak daytime temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s between Friday and Sunday.
Idaho Falls and Pocatello saw record temperatures last month. In those communities, Cropp says it was the hottest July on record.
“For Pocatello, our normal (temperatures) is 91 for this time of year. We’re used to these really high temperatures (as of late), but we’ll be right around normal (the rest of the week),” she says.
Dry conditions are expected to continue with little to no chance of rain. It may be breezy in the afternoon, but Cropp is not forecasting any major windstorms.

With several wildfires burning throughout the Pacific Northwest, including the 2,500-acre Big Rock Fire near Heise, the air remains smoky Monday night. An air quality advisory is in place for Bannock, Bingham, Caribou, Oneida and Power Counties, which is expected to last through Wednesday.

Although the advisory is not currently in place for Bonneville and Jefferson Counties, Cropp says the smoke could get worse over the next few days and that could change.
During this time, sensitive groups may experience health effects, while the general public may be less affected. The Department of Environmental Quality recommends that residents limit their time outside.
