Free pet adoptions being offered at Snake River Animal Shelter

IDAHO FALLS — Looking to add a furry member to the family? Snake River Animal Shelter is offering several opportunities to adopt a pet for free over the next few months.
The shelter is participating in the ASPCA’s Rescue Effect campaign, a nationwide effort aimed at increasing pet adoptions and freeing up space at shelters that are struggling with capacity.
Snake River Animal Shelter will waive adoption fees during regular business hours on the following dates:
Aug. 28-29
Sept. 25-26
Oct. 30-31
“We are thrilled to partner with the ASPCA for this year’s Rescue Effect campaign, and we are incredibly grateful for their generous grant, which directly funds our fee-waived adoption days,” Snake River Animal Shelter Executive Director Michelle Ziel-Dingman said.
Ziel-Dingman said the shelter’s kennels are full and emphasized that adopting one animal can ultimately help others by opening up space and resources.
“Local families aren’t just giving one pet a loving home, they are opening up crucial space and resources so we can save the next animal in need,” she said.
Nearly 6 million dogs and cats entered shelters and rescue organizations across the country in 2025, according to the ASPCA. Those unable to adopt are encouraged to consider fostering, which can also free up space for other animals.
The Rescue Effect campaign runs through October. The ASPCA is providing $2 million in grants to participating shelters and rescue organizations nationwide to help cover adoption fees and other costs.
