Alleged gun threat at Idaho Falls elementary school deemed not credible

IDAHO FALLS – An alleged gun threat at Longfellow Elementary school was not credible.
That’s the report from Idaho Falls District 91 Superintendent Karla LaOrange in an email to parents on Friday. In the email, LaOrange explained that on Thursday afternoon, they received a report that a student brought a gun to school earlier in the week. A student said that another student “showed them a firearm and made a threat directed at them and their family.”
Administrators contacted Idaho Falls Police Department. Following an investigation, police “verified that the student does not have access to a firearm in their home. IFPD has determined that there was no credible threat.”
“Longfellow administration also conducted an investigation. IFPD and Longfellow admin found no evidence that a firearm was brought to school,” LaOrange wrote in the email.
Idaho Falls Police Department spokeswoman Jessica Clements confirmed to EastIdahoNews.com on Saturday morning that they did investigate the alleged threat, which is reported to have happened on Tuesday. The department “has no evidence to support that a verbal threat was made or that a gun was brought to school.”
“IFPD has verified that the accused student does not have access to firearms,” Clements says.
“Idaho Falls School District 91 and IFPD take all reports seriously. Student and staff safety is of utmost importance to everyone in our district, and violent rumors, jokes, or threats are investigated by both administration and law enforcement. We encourage all students to talk to a trusted adult immediately if they hear or see something that concerns them,” LaOrange says.
