GALLERY: Viva Mexico, hundreds of locals celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day through food, music and dance

IDAHO FALLS — Hispanic Heritage Month officially began on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, to celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day, a local business held an event that drew hundreds of community members.
Co-owners of Calakas Tacos and Miches, Liliana and Mito Sanchez, spoke with EastIdahoNews.com about Wednesday’s celebration at the Snake River Greenbelt. This was their second celebration; the first was held on Sunday at the Waterfront in Idaho Falls. Liliana said having two events ensured that if folks couldn’t make it to one, they still had another chance.
“This year we decided to do it here just to try to get our community together,” Liliana said.
Mito said that as Idaho grows, they want to find many ways to bring different communities, traditions and cultures together through their events. While they focus more on traditional Hispanic and Latino events, they’re open to everyone enjoying them.
“It’s important for our Latino community and for the rest of the community to know that we’re not just here to cause trouble,” Mito said. “We want to just bring fun and enjoyment to the people, to everybody.”
Wednesday’s event began after 5 p.m. Community members had about eight food and drink options, and it lasted until 9 p.m.
Various musicians performed for eventgoers, including Alvaro y su Technobanda Vallarta, DJ Guero, Los Berinstain’s, and the LED Robots.
