Man who killed his son during psychosis shares his story – and why Lindsay Clancy turned to him

Three weeks: that’s how long it took for a father with no history of mental illness to go from sleep-deprived and anxious to the unthinkable.

In July 2004, while in a drug-induced psychosis, David Carmichael took the life of his 11-year-old son, Ian, in Ontario, Canada.

He was charged with first-degree murder and, a year later, a Canadian court found him not criminally responsible, the legal finding that he was insane at the time.

The drug was Paxil, one of the most widely prescribed antidepressants in the world.

Over the past two decades, David has rebuilt a life from the wreckage and become one of the world’s most persistent voices on prescription drug safety.

His story carries new weight right now as the Lindsay Clancy trial has played out over the past two months.

David was someone both Lindsay and her husband, Patrick, turned to before the trial began. He may be one of the only people alive who understands, from the inside, exactly what she’s accused of and exactly what her mind may have done to her.
