IDAHO FALLS — With the recent forecasts of heavy rain and a flood watch issued for the local area, the City of Idaho Falls is urging residents to monitor storm drains near or adjacent to their streets as they become blocked by leaves and other debris.
Storm drains are typically a metal grate in the curb and gutter. They are important for keeping streets from flooding with water. If storm drains are plugged and a street floods, nearby residences can also be affected.
Only clear a drain yourself if you can safely do it from the sidewalk without affecting traffic. Otherwise, call after-hours dispatch for city services at (208) 612-8108. Please stay on the phone through the message, and you will be directed to access the public works dispatch following the initial message.
If a storm drain is blocked on a busy city street, please notify the city and wait for crews to clear the storm drain.
