DURHAM, N.C. — It’s been 14 years since Faith Danielle Hedgepeth, a 19-year-old student at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, was found beaten to death in the off-campus apartment she shared with her friend.

While there was plenty of evidence left behind at the crime scene by Hedgepeth’s killer, it took nearly a decade for police to make an arrest.

In 2021, Miguel Salguero Olivares was taken into custody following a traffic stop. Police say he had no known connection to Hedgepeth, but gene analysis showed his DNA matched the male DNA found on her body and the suspected murder weapon — a liquor bottle.

Salguero Olivares was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, first-degree rape, first-degree sexual offense and first-degree burglary in Hedgepeth’s death. He pleaded not guilty in November 2024.

On Wednesday, Durham County prosecutors began presenting their case against Salguero Olivares. His trial is expected to last somewhere between three and six weeks, and will be livestreamed here and on CourtroomInsider.com.

Testimony is scheduled to begin each day at 10 a.m. EDT (8 a.m. MDT).
