Bush Won’t Contest Florida’s Allowance of Same-Sex Marriage

William Thomas Cain/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Jeb Bush waded into the thorny issue of same-sex marriage as the former Florida governor’s state began to issue licenses Monday to gay and lesbian couples.
Bush, who is exploring a run for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination, has long been an opponent of homosexual nuptials.
Be that it as it may, Bush said in a statement that “We have to respect the rule of law” in reacting to a circuit court judge lifting a stay on her own ruling from last year that banning same-sex marriage is unconstitutional.
Mindful that the GOP’s evangelical base opposes gay and lesbian couples from tying the knot, Bush covered himself by saying he remains on the side of “those of us who believe marriage is a sacrament and want to safeguard religious liberty.”
Although virtually all potential Republican candidates for the White House have publicly spoken out against same-sex marriage, there are others, such as Bush, who believes the matter has been settled by the judiciary in their states, including New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker.
