Gavin Newsom Won’t Run for California Senate Seat

Photo by Justin Sullivan/Getty Images(LOS ANGELES) — One contender to possibly replace Sen. Barbara Boxer from California, who announced on Thursday that she will not run for re-election, said on Monday he will not enter the 2016 Senate race.
It was expected that California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom would put his name in the running for Boxer’s seat, but on Monday he wrote on Facebook he will not seek election in the upcoming race.
“It’s always better to be candid than coy. While I am humbled by the widespread encouragement of so many and hold in the highest esteem those who serve us in federal office, I know that my head and my heart, my young family’s future, and our unfinished work all remain firmly in the State of California — not Washington D.C. Therefore I will not seek election to the U.S. Senate in 2016,” Newsom wrote.
Newsom could have been a top contender among Democrats.
Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has said he is considering a run along with other big-name politicians in the Golden State.
