JaysonPhotography/iStock/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — It was a calmer day on Wall Street after Wednesday’s computer glitch that halted trading, with stocks bounced back following big losses.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 17,548.62, up 33.20 from its open.
The NASDAQ was up by 12.64 to finish the day at 4,922.40, while the S&P 500 was also up by 4.63 to finish the session at a close of 2,051.31.
The New York Stock Exchange confirmed on Thursday that the outage the previous day was caused by problems associated with a software upgrade on its computers. The upgrade caused communication problems between its trading software and other systems, according to the NYSE.
IBM announced on Thursday that it has achieved a breakthrough in shrinking computer chips. The company has created a prototype of the world’s first semi-conductor with transistors that are 7 nanometers – which would require about 10,000 in order to get to the width of a human hair.
