In his weekly audience, the Catholic leader told followers it’s important to take time from work to enjoy life — even in tough times.

The pope said celebrating gives people a break from work and reminds us that we should not be slaves to our work lives.

As Italy grinds to a halt for its mid-August break known as Ferragosto, Francis told those gathered in Rome that there are still millions of people, including children, who are slaves through work — a result, the pope said, of an obsession with economic profit and efficiency that risks distorting human rhythms of life.

It’s even worth infiltrating work with little breaks to celebrate birthdays, marriages or birth, Francis insisted. Putting human warmth, he said, into the economic grind.
