Netflix Says ‘Top Gear’ Trio ‘Wasn’t Worth the Money’

Justin Sullivan/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Amazon was the highest bidder, but is it sour grapes for Netflix?
When the three faces of Top Gear left BBC, car fans wondered who would take them in. There were rumors that Netflix, Amazon, and maybe even Hulu would put down the money to create a new automotive show, but eventually Amazon was the highest bidder.
According to the BBC, a Netflix senior executive says the streaming service didn’t offer the Top Gear trio a contract because “it wasn’t worth the money.”
Jeremy Clarkson, former host of Top Gear, was let go from the hit show after hitting a producer. Richard Hammond and James May, his co-hosts, filed suit, saying they couldn’t continue without Clarkson.
Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, told The Telegraph earlier in August that the deal to acquire the three for a new car show exclusive to Amazon was “very, very expensive.”
“They’re worth a lot and they know it,” he told The Telegraph.
