Arthur Benjamin bringing magic of math to Rexburg tonight

REXBURG — Imagine squaring a four-digit number in your head.
It’s no problem for Mathemagician Arthur Benjamin, who can do math mentally, faster than his participants can on a calculator. The Mathemagician combines his love for math with the mysteries of magic.
Benjamin will perform at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30 at the Madison High School Performing Arts Center.
The Madison Education Foundation is sponsoring the event and hosting a combined fundraiser. Tickets are $5 a piece and will help fund a perpetual grant for school teachers in Madison County. Tickets can be purchased at the door.
The Mathemagician encourages participants of any age to get excited about math. Former Foundation president David Rail, said the audience can look forward to a lot of fun with numbers.
“He shows off those tricks, but then he teaches you how to do it as part of the show,” Rail said.
Benjamin also will be the keynote speaker for the 2015 Idaho Math and Science Teachers Conference taking place Oct. 1 and 2 in Rexburg.
Benjamin received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in Mathematical Sciences in 1989. He is currently a Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College. Among his nearly 300 research talks, he has participated in three TED talks, and has an array of mathematical publications.
This year the Madison Education Foundation granted over $15,000 to its teachers. They anticipate raising about $5,500 in tonight’s act.
