PROVO, Ut. – A Utah woman pushing a shopping cart with her child inside is recovering after being hit by a car in a Sam’s Club parking lot.

The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses say the driver of a Jeep Cherokee drove into the crosswalk in front of Sam’s Club at a high rate of speed. Surveillance video released by the Provo Police Department shows there were several pedestrians in the crosswalk at the time.

The driver struck a woman who was pushing a cart with a child.

“Miraculously, the driver did not hit the cart containing the child,” a post on the Provo Police Department Facebook page read. “After hitting the victim, the driver reportedly got out of his vehicle to inspect for damage, and then attempted to leave the scene. Witnesses prevented the driver from leaving until police arrived.”

The driver of the Jeep, 66-year-old Carl Anderson, was arrested for DUI, operating a vehicle without insurance, and revoked registration.

The pedestrian, a 61 year old female, was transported to the hospital where it was determined she suffered a separated shoulder, severe neck sprain, hip bruising, and other minor bruising and scratches.
