City of Pocatello braces for potential flooding

The following is a news release from the city of Pocatello.

With temperatures forecasted to be in the 40s and rain possible, the city of Pocatello is bracing for potential flooding.

The National Weather Service is currently forecasting snow for Wednesday followed by temperatures warming on Thursday into the 40s and a 90 percent chance of rain. Due to the conditions, there is a potential for excess stormwater to collect in low-lying areas of Pocatello.

“Before the storm arrives, crews with the Street Operations Department are clearing storm drains of snow and ice in an effort to help keep the water flowing,” said Tom Kirkman, Deputy Public Works Director. “Any time we hear about the threat of flooding, we take the forecast very seriously.”

Sand and sandbags will also be available for residents at the Street Operations shop located at 1080 South 1st Avenue. Residents will be required to fill their own sandbags and are asked to take no more than eight sandbags. If it becomes necessary, additional sand and sand bags will be moved to other locations in town.

“If you see a storm drain that is plugged, please feel free to ‘adopt-the-drain’ and try to clear the obstruction,” Kirkman said. “We would greatly appreciate the help.”
