Obituary
Richard Lane Hansen
May 4th, 1940 - August 10th, 2023
Richard Lane Hansen was born May 4, 1940, the last of 4 children born to James Cleve Hansen and Alta May Egbert, in Tetonia, Idaho. When he was 3 years old the family relocated to the Lost River Valley and began potato farming in Moore, Idaho. He attended school in Moore through the 8th grade and then attended school in Arco – graduating from Butte County High School in 1958, and married his high school sweetheart, Helen Walker, on September 19 that same year. They were sealed in the LDS Logan Temple. They headed off to attend college at Utah State University shortly thereafter. They were blessed with 7 children over the next 24 years. During their marriage, Lane worked for the Forest Service briefly, and then they returned to the Lost River Valley, where he worked at EBR1 for the next 8 years. Not enjoying packing a lunch box to work, he trained to sell life insurance. He was always charismatic and loved people, but he did not enjoy the high-pressure of selling life insurance, so he soon switched to selling property and casualty insurance, which became his lifelong career. He originally sold insurance in the Boise area, then bought an agency in Arco in 1975, so the family returned to live in Arco, where all 7 of his children graduated from Butte High School. He officially retired after Dave’s accident in 2009 and then devoted his time to being with Dave. He had a lifelong love of fishing and would head up to the Salmon River at every opportunity. He also loved to hunt and enjoyed many adventures with each of his sons, sons-in-law, and daughters, and many of their high school friends. His sweetheart, Helen worked side-by-side with him as they built the business in Arco. He was well known throughout the valley as a mountain goat–no one could ever keep up with him. Daily walks up the Number Hill were part of his life until the last three years. He supported all of his children and grandchildren over their years of sports and other interests-–they traveled many miles to catch a grandchild’s event. He was known for his deep bass voice and sang in community choirs, plays, and especially barbershop quartets. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many capacities during his life. His greatest love was his family! He is survived by his wife, Helen, and his children, Teresa Dando, Marianne Noy, Toni (Darrell Lee) McDonald, Michael Lane (Carla) Hansen, Lynette (Doug) Simpson, Richard (Talisha) Hansen, and David Cleve Hansen, and 22 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings, and 1 grandson, Nathaniel Stewart Dando.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Arco Ward Building, 701 County Road, Arco, ID. A viewing will be held on Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the church and also for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Lost River Cemetery under the care of the Anderson Family Funeral Home.
