Hurt skier rescued near Grand Targhee

ALTA, Wyoming — A 27-year-old skier was hurt near a local ski resort and was rescued by emergency crews.
On Wednesday after 12:30 p.m., Teton County Search & Rescue rescued a skier had taken a long fall in Grand Targhee backcountry.
The man from Washington fell off a cornice in an out-of-bounds area accessed off Mary’s Nipple from Grand Targhee Ski Resort, a news release said.
A cornice is an overhanging mass of hardened snow at the edge of a mountain.
According to crews, the skier was on a ridgeline when the cornice broke beneath him, which then caused him to fall about 100 feet into the basin below.
Ski patrol reached the skier and put him into a helicopter so he could be flown out of the backcountry. He was then put into a ground ambulance waiting for him at the base of Targhee. He was transported to a local hospital.
It’s unknown what the condition of the skier was in when he was transported.
“TCSAR appreciates the well-coordinated response from Grand Targhee Ski Patrol, and would like to remind backcountry users to be extremely cautious of cornices while approaching or traversing ridgelines,” the release said.
