BOISE — The American Red Cross is urging the public to donate blood in response to a rising trend in trauma cases during summer holidays.

Each year, millions of Americans travel, go boating, enjoy water sports, camp, and participate in other outdoor activities during the summer months.

Unfortunately, these activities increase the likelihood of serious accidents that require emergency medical attention and, often, critical blood transfusions.

Making and keeping blood donation appointments is more important now than ever, according to a news release from the American Red Cross. During Trauma Awareness Month this May, the Red Cross is calling on eligible individuals to take action and donate.

All blood types are urgently needed, with a special emphasis on Type O blood, which is in highest demand at hospitals due to its universal usability in emergencies.

Volunteer blood donors are often the unseen heroes behind a patient’s survival — especially for trauma victims who may need hundreds of units of blood.

“It’s the blood already on the shelves that saves lives when every second counts,” said Keeley Van Middendorp, communications manager at the Red Cross.

There are several different ways that you can help save lives.

Donate blood

  • Donate blood if you are at least 17 years old (or 16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, and are in good health.
  • Bring ID when you donate. (A blood donor card, driver’s license, or two other forms of ID are accepted. Click here for more on valid IDs.)
  • Encourage others to make an appointment and donate with you.

Volunteer

The Red Cross is also seeking volunteers to serve as transportation specialists, who play a vital role in delivering blood products to hospitals quickly and safely.

The Red Cross is also offering special prizes for donors:

  • Donate by May 31 to receive an exclusive Red Cross solar lantern, while supplies last.
  • Donate between June 1 to 30 and get a $15 Amazon gift card by email and a chance to win one of two $7,000 gift cards.
  • All donors in May are automatically entered to win a U.S. trip of their choice for two.

The American Red Cross provides about 40% of the nation’s blood supply, and your support is essential to help patients recover and survive.

Lives depend on blood donors.
