A ride to remember: Rexburg’s Literacy Bus gets a makeover
Published at
REXBURG — In a vibrant show of community spirit and dedication to literacy, the beloved Literacy Bus in Rexburg has received a dazzling transformation thanks to Madison District students and staff.
This iconic bus has long been a cherished part of the district’s summer programming, parking alongside the Summer Lunch Program to provide students with free books and fuel their passion for reading during the break. But after years of dedicated service, it was clear the bus needed more than just a tune-up, it needed a complete makeover; and the community delivered.
With support from donors and a crew of talented local partners, and under the leadership of Madison School District Transportation Director Brandon Caldwell, the Literacy Bus has undergone a full renovation.
The exterior now features bold, eye-catching graphics designed by Signify Graphics, made possible with the support of the Madison Education Foundation.
Inside, a once-simple space has been transformed into a warm, welcoming environment thanks to the creative talents of Kelsey Shumway and her Madison High School Interior Design students.
Adding the finishing touches, the district’s own mechanics and drivers went above and beyond — crafting custom bookshelves, completing vital repairs, and ensuring the bus was road-ready for another summer of reading adventures.
“One of the most exciting traditions of the Literacy Bus is to park alongside our Summer Lunch Program, giving students the opportunity to grab a free book and keep their love of reading alive all summer long,” said Macail Chavez, Madison District Director of Communications.
The newly remodeled Literacy Bus was proudly given to Darnea Lamb, her team of reading coaches, and the women who champion literacy every day. As it rolls out this summer, the bus will once again serve as a beacon of learning and imagination — a mobile library with a mission.
“We were honored to unveil the new Literacy Bus to the incredible women who work tirelessly to promote reading and support our students,” said Chavez.
