ESPN: Clay Matthews Expected to Miss One Month
Published at(NEW YORK) — Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews is expected to miss one month while he recovers from a broken thumb, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Matthews injured the thumb during the team’s victory over the Lions Sunday when he sacked quarterback Matthew Stafford on the final play of the third quarter. He did not return to the game.
ESPN reports Matthews will likely have to undergo surgery.
Packers head coach Mike McCarthy expressed concern for his star linebacker.
“I’m hopeful it’s not season-ending,” McCarthy said Monday. “I think we’re all hopeful, but you have to get all the opinions and make sure you always do right by the player.”
Matthews, a four-time Pro Bowler, has 18 tackles, three sacks and two forced fumbles through four games this season.
