IDAHO FALLS — If you’ve recently had a raven tapping at your chamber door — or seen that image on a few online ads — this might be why: An Edgar Allan Poe speakeasy experience is coming to Idaho Falls.

The event, which creators say fuses the famous author’s Gothic tales with some unique signature libations, is coming to The Downtown Event Center on April 17 and 18. Each performance will include four readings of Poe’s short stories and poems and four unique cocktails based on the literary works.

“People really just enjoy (Edgar Allan Poe’s) work, I think it’s something a lot of people follow from childhood. The alcohol is kind of a bonus,” said Caitlyn Horan, director of operations for Midnight Creative, which puts on the speakeasy experience.

Poe was a 19th-century American short-story writer, poet, critic, and editor famous for his stories of mystery, the macabre and horror, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. He’s even credited with creating the modern detective story.

Many of next week’s speakeasy tickets are already sold out, according to the tickets website, but there are still some available for April 18. The performances will take place at The DEC, 480 Park Ave.

Horan said this event in Idaho Falls is the first of three chapters, or reading groups, that began touring the nation in 2023. She said this will be the only time Chapter One shows in Idaho Falls this year — so you’ll have to get a ticket or risk seeing it nevermore.

Here are the stories and corresponding signature cocktails for chapter one:

The tales

The drinks

  • Pale Blue Eye: A refreshing light-blue cocktail made with blueberry vodka, fresh lemon juice, rose syrup and topped with La Croix.
  • Cocktail of Red Death: A bright, vibrant cocktail made with 100-proof vodka, cherry herring, Benedictine liquor, lime juice, pineapple juice and bitters.
  • Edgar’s Twisted Brandy Milk Punch: Equal parts Kentucky Bourbon and French Brandy meet and mix with vanilla cream, milk syrup and half-and-half; topped with star anise.
  • The Nevermore: A black and gold cocktail fueled by orange peach blossom vodka, lime juice and secret spices.

If you absolutely can’t make the Idaho Falls events, the Edgar Allen Poe Speakeasy group has events planned nearby in Twin Falls, April 23-24, and Ogden, Utah, May 8-9. Tickets can be purchased here on the group’s website.
