Our usual Pet of the Week segment will return next week. Meanwhile, Snake River Animal Shelter vet Kasey Sweeney, has a few tips about pet food.

Sweeney says there are a variety of Kibble brands targeted to cats and dogs of different ages. She says many people think their pets needs more calories than what it says on the label.

Sweeney says cats need about 200 calories a day. The amount a dog needs varies, depending on the size. Around 500 calories, on average, is the recommended daily amount.

“We want to make sure that for our particular dog-cat breed that we’re following the right label on our Kibble,” says Sweeney.

If your pet is not eating, not liking its food, vomiting, or gaining or losing weight, call your vet.

To see animals available for adoption or learn more, stop by the shelter at 3000 Lindsay Boulevard in Idaho Falls during regular business hours. It’s open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. It closes at 5 p.m. on Saturday. You can also visit the website or call (208) 523-4219.
